Wines:
Bodegas Santa Rufina 2001 'Alta Gama'. Awards: "Tempranillo De Plata 2007" "PLATA en el Gran Concurso Internacional Mundus Wini 2007". 100% Tempranillo grape - Vines: minimum 60 years old - Preparation: traditional strict selection vineyard. Manual fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks of 6,000 liters. Ageing: 24 months in fine-grained American oak (70%) and French (30%). 50,000 bottles (75 cl.) Alcohol 13.5% Vol.
Tasting Notes: Color bright cherry red with garnet piping. Nose of good intensity, fresh, very ripe, with memories of strawberry jam. Ripe black fruit, licorice and china ink. Tap lightly roasted, smoked and some sweet vanilla background. It was cool but with character. Tannins present, sweet and fleshy. Correct acidity, easy and attractive. Smooth and remarkable balance.
Mas Doix Priorat 'Salanques' 2004. Robert Parker 94. Rating: 94 - Drink 2007-2017 - Cost: $30-$95. The 2004 Salanques is the second wine of the prestigious Mas Doix. It is 65% Garnacha, 20% Carinena, and equal parts Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon aged 14 months in French oak. Inky puple, the wine has a lovely perfume of mineral, truffle, pencil lead, kirsch, black currant, and blueberry. Ripe and full-bodied, the wine has a velvety texture, superb depth, and govs of flavor. Drink this pleasure-packed wine over the next 8-10 years.
Mas Doix was established in the village of Poboleda at the foot of Monsant in October, 1998, but the Doix-Llagostera family winemaking tradition began in 1850. The Doix family originates from Poboleda and has been involved in Priorat viticulture for the last 5 generations. After the phylloxera plague, they replanted their Garnacha and Cariñena vines with American rootstock. Today the family owns 20 hectares of vineyards. "Les Salanques," at an altitude of 350 meters is planted with Garnacha and Cariñena. The vineyards, 70 to 100 years-old, are planted on brown, slaty licorella soils which are extremely high in minerals and are a key factor contributing to the quality and aging potential of Priorat wines. Mas Doix (pronounced "mahss doysh") also keeps yields low and only picks the best grapes. The vinification process is meticulous, starting with the rigorous selection in the vineyard, and later selection on the belt in the cellar. The wine undergoes minimal handling and maceration lasts for 5 weeks in temperature controlled vats.

Château La Cardonne 2000 is a scintillating, dense purplish red. Its complex, fragrant bouquet is a mixture of spice, blackcurrant and bilberry. The palate is round and flavoursome, introducing mineral and deliciously smoky notes on a smooth tannin base of the very finest quality. Long, fresh finish. Drink after 2005: $22
2005 Winemaker's Tasting Notes: "This vintage of Ranch House Red has a remarkably deep and dark garnet color. It exudes the character of the place. All the best LMR flavors are present - vibrant black currant, fruit, earthiness and incredible spice notes. But you know this wine isn't a Cabernet Sauvignon because its complex fruit character is completely fresh, approachable and spicy. There is a difference between spice from fruit and spice from oak. This wine has all its spice (mostly white and black pepper) from its fruit. This wine is perfectly balanced and ready for the table. Its tannins are ample, but soft. A pleasant backbone of acidity results in a mouthwatering, lingering finish." - Appellation: Napa Valley Alcohol: 13.5% Pairing: Burgers and short ribsProduction: 700 cases: $19
