Harvard Malaria Initiative

Events - Workshops

The Harvard Malaria Initiative has sponsored malaria workshops in Senegal that were attended by participants from across West Africa.  In May 2001, the first workshop presented an overview of malaria in Africa and the tools needed to conduct research. Topics included: disease control programs, malarial biology, epidemiology, bioinformatics, parasitology, parasite diversity, immunology, drug resistance, lab methods, and research bioethics. In July 2002, the Program co-sponsored an intensive course on molecular techniques with an emphasis on computational biology and bioinformatics. This course incorporated both didactic presentations and hands-on laboratory and computer training. This was the first course in bioinformatics to be offered in West Africa and it received wide attention in the scientific community. Attendees included professionals from universities, hospitals, the private sector and government and provided outreach to the broader scientific community.
