Emerging and remerging pathogens represent major threats to human health, and infectious diseases still account for over one third of deaths worldwide. An unprecedented opportunity now exists to reduce significantly the global burden of infectious diseases-the genomes of all the major human pathogens have been or are soon to be sequenced. The genomes of human and mouse have also been completed, and it is now possible to examine the interaction of host and pathogen with new approaches and tools.
