Human Subjects Training Requirements

Harvard Ethics Training in Human Research (HETHR)

HETHR is Harvard's online training program in human subjects protections. Please review all instructions and the animated demonstrations when using HETHR for the first time, and contact Justin Fendo with any questions. HETHR will automatically issue you a certificate of training for your records.  Certification from baseline and refresher training lasts for three years from completion date.

Alternatively, OHRA grants three years of credit (from date of completion) for the CITI online module (required by Partners HealthCare Systems), NIH online training, Family Health International Research Ethics Online Training, and attendence of three OHRA Education Series Sessions. Other human subjects trainings are accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on the rigor of the course and provision of certification documentation.  Please contact Justin Fendo to determine if another program qualifies.

  HETHR Training

First-Time

Trainees:

Complete HETHR baseline training: all Basic topics, all Vignettes, and four Electives.

Refresher Training:

Complete HETHR refresher training when your certification expires (3 years after completion): all Basic topics, all Vignettes, and two Electives.

Who needs training?

Anyone working directly with human subjects, data, or tissue that he or she can link back to individual subjects, must fulfill human subjects training requirements every three years.  All Principle Investigators (PIs), Co-Investigators, and those meeting the NIH definition of  "Key Personnel" must complete training regardless of whether or not they have access to identifiable data/tissue or contact with subjects.

Please note that anyone (regardless of role) working on a protocol deemed "Not Human Subjects Research" or "Exempt" need not complete training.
