The Center sponsored a half-day symposium entitled "The Environment's Role in Asthma, Cognition, Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease" at the Conference Center at Harvard Medical School. The first session was a set of oral presentations by new environmental health investigators. Dr. Marc Weiskopf, a recent graduate in Epidemiology, spoke on the application of magnetic resonance imaging methods to noninvasively measure neurochemicals associated with metal exposures. Dr. Heather Nelson, a Center New Investigator in Environmental Health, described her work on genetic modifiers of cancer risk associated with arsenic exposures. Dr. Greg Wellenius, a recent doctoral graduate with joint degrees in environmental health and epidemiology, described his studies of effects the effects of particulate air pollution in patients with congestive heart failure. The second session was a viewing of more than 50 posters by Center investigators. This was followed by a dinner honoring Dr. Joe Brain for his service as Chair of the Department of Environmental Health and as Director of the Harvard-NIEHS Center.
