Harvard NIEHS Center for Environmental Health

Environmental Statistics and Bioinformatics Core Members

Faculty/Staff

Interests/Background and Role in the Core

Vickie Beaulieu

Program Coordinator

Has worked as a staff member in the Biostatistics Department for nine years. Has served as the staff Coordinator of the Environmental Statistics Core for approximately seven years now and is highly familiar with all its activities. Also assists the Department Chair.

Brent Coull, Ph.D

Associate Professor of Biostatistics

Specializes in the development and applications statistical methods for multiple outcomes and high dimensional data problems, with applications in epidemiological and animal toxicology studies related to air pollution. Available for general biostatistical support for Center Investigators.

Elaine Hoffman, Ph.D.

Research Associate in Biostatistics

Strong background in applied statistics. Will provide collaborative research support for Center Investigators, particularly related to biostatistical design and analysis, and will also serve as the Core "point person" (see next section).

Xihong Lin, Ph.D

Professor of Biostatistics

Specializes in statistical theory related to measurement error, repeated measures models and high dimensional data analysis. Works on applications related to cancer epidemiology and bioinformatics, especially proteomics. Available for general biostatistical support for Center Investigators.

Steve Melly, MS

Programmer/Analyst

Experienced GIS analyst. Will assist Center investigators on the collection and analysis of spatial data. Skilled in several GIS programming languages, including ARCGIS. Will work closely with Drs Ryan and Paciorek and other Core faculty to maintain a strong GIS lab within the Center.

Chris Paciorek, Ph.D

Assistant professor of Biostatistics

Specializes in spatial statistics, statistical computing and Bayesian methods. Available for general biostatistical support for Center investigators, with special emphasis on projects involving spatial data.

Joel Schwartz, Ph.D

Professor of Environmental Health

Internationally known environmental epidemiologist who will advise Center investigators in this area.

Oliver Hofmann, Ph.D.

Research Associate, Biostatistics

Specializes in bioinformatics.  Also skilled in data base construction and management and available to Center investigators as needed for advice on data management issues.

Andy Houseman, Ph.D.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biostatistics

Antonella Zanobetti

Senior Research Scientist

Along with the faculty and staff listed in the Table, Center investigators will have access to a variety of other faculty members and departmental statisticians with specialized expertise in various areas of relevance.

Dr. Brent Coull will serve as Core Director and have overall responsibility for ensuring that all Core aims are met, that scientific support is of the highest quality and that all administrative aspects of Core management run smoothly. The Core will continue its very successful team-based approach to serving the needs of Center investigators. Under this approach, all core technical staff and faculty will share responsibility for meeting Center needs in terms of support and training. Various individuals will be called on to provide specialized expertise, for example, Dr. Paciorek for spatial statistics, Dr. Schwartz for environmental epidemiology, Dr. O. Hofmann for bioinformatics. Mr. Melly will provide GIS support.

Dr. Elaine Hoffman will serve as the Executive Director of the Core and will be the designated "point person" for investigators needing assistance. As a general rule, investigators will be expected to include an appropriate level of biostatistical and/or bioinformatics support in all new grant proposals. Hence, we anticipate that most requests for assistance will relate to the preparation of grant proposals as well as the design and analysis of pilot studies. Investigators requesting analysis support for existing projects that do not include funds for biostatistical or bioinformatics support will be assisted according to the following priorities:

  1. Grant submissions or resubmissions;
  2. Design and analysis of pilot studies;
  3. Analysis requests from new investigators with projects that do not include biostatistical or bioinformatics support;
  4. Analysis requests from other investigators with projects that do not include biostatistical or bioinformatics support.

Dr. E. Hoffman will triage requests for assistance according to these priorities, handling some projects herself or working with Dr. Coull to distribute the tasks to other Core faculty and research staff. Investigators may contact Dr. Hoffman by email, phone or via a web-based request form (PUT IN WEBLINK TO REQUEST FORM HERE TOO).

Program Coordinator, Ms. Vickie Beaulieu will track all Core usage and maintain records. Drs. Coull and Hoffman will periodically review usage with other Core faculty and develop appropriate strategies to handle the load and make sure all parts of the Center are being served well.

All core faculty and staff will meet at least monthly to review Core activities and plan ongoing activities. Additional meetings can easily be arranged as needed or on an impromptu basis, since most faculty and staff have offices very near each other.
