April 2009

On April 21, Takemi Program Faculty Advisor Marc Mitchell will present to USAID Global Health Bureau on the topic of: m-health: delivering evidence based medicine in low income countries through the use of electronic clinical protocols.

Abstract: There is good evidence that the use of evidence based protocols such as IMCI can improve health outcomes in low income countries.  However, several recent studies have shown that provider adherence to these protocols is often limited.  Dr. Mitchell's work both at HSPH and as CEO of D-tree International (http://www.d-tree.org/) has been to address this problem through the use of mobile technology (cell phones and PDAs) running specially developed protocols that take providers step by step through the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients in low income countries. His work in Tanzania and South Africa suggests that provider adherence to the IMCI protocols improves with the use of mobile technology and that counselors or nurses can effectively triage HIV/AIDS patients in busy clinics where doctors or clinical officers are scarce. Other applications of this technology being developed include improved malaria treatment algorithms, screening for TB in HIV/AIDS clinics, community based support for HIV/AIDS patients, family planning counseling, , and improved care for chronic disease such at diabetes and hypertension.
