Summer Session

The Summer Session provides the same academically rigorous courses offered to degree candidates during the regular academic year, only shortened from 8 weeks to 3 weeks and meeting daily. The courses are very fast-paced, intense, and require the full participation of the student. These courses are taught by Harvard faculty.

The Summer Session offers courses for academic credit in the following concentrations:

  • Biostatistics
  • Environmental Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Policy and Management
  • Society, Human Development, & Health
The Summer Session website can be found at: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/summer/

Program in Clinical Effectiveness (PCE)

The Summer Program in Clinical Effectiveness- affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School-is intended for physicians who have completed their residencies and wish to obtain the quantitative and analytical skills needed for careers in clinical research. Candidates must be fellows or faculty members and are usually sponsored by their clinical departments or divisions. Students attend an intensive, seven-week, 15-credit summer program, comprising courses in biostatistics, epidemiology, and health policy and management. Upon completion of the summer program, qualified participants who apply and are admitted to a degree program may apply these academic credits toward the requirements for either a master of public health (MPH) or a master of science (SM) degree.

Professional Communication Seminar (PCS)

The Professional Communication Seminar (PCS) provides Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) international students with an opportunity to improve their academic, writing, and oral communication skills, and to experience the School's interactive style of teaching and learning before formal classes begin.

For those unaccustomed to its educational culture, United States’ universities can present significant challenges.  Students are required to be highly proficient in the English language since they will be expected to understand and complete assignments based on large amounts of information.  All students must be able to critically read large amounts of information, write analytical and comparative papers, create and deliver oral presentations, and take part in fast-paced discussions in a competitive classroom environment.

PCS helps HSPH international students meet these challenges. Using public health materials, students gain the academic skills and communication strategies they need to succeed at HSPH. For more information, visit the PCS website.

Center for Professional Continuing Education

The Center for Continuing Professional Education offers a variety of programs in a number of formats: executive courses, seminars, conferences, customized courses, off-site programs, grant-funded projects, and self-study projects. Faculty are drawn predominantly from the Harvard University system, complemented by a cadre of talented practitioner instructors. For more information, visit the Center website at http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/ccpe/about.html.
