The Airway MechanoBiology Lab focuses on exploring the complex and dynamic interplay between mechanics and biology.
We are actively investigating the molecular mechanisms by which cells sense and respond to physical forces in vitro and in vivo, and how cells in turn modulate their own mechanical properties and their surrounding extracellular environment to effect a change in tissue mechanics.
We explore these issues in the context of the respiratory system, where physical forces are continuously present (e.g. breathing) and greatly modified by disease (e.g. asthma), and where alterations in tissue mechanical behavior contribute markedly to pathophysiology.
The lab is jointly headed by PIs Daniel Tschumperlin and Jeffrey Drazen , and is part of the Physiology Program within the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.
