The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) proposes to work in close collaboration with Partners for Urban Knowledge, Action, and Research(PUKAR), based in Mumbai, India, to carry out multifaceted study in urban health in developing countries. The study will examine the physical and social determinants of health in disadvantaged urban settings and the increased difficulty for providing for health in rapidly growing urban areas characterized by extensive poverty. To group the research in a concrete situation and to facilitate the generation of interventions to improve urban health, researchers will examine in details conditions in a slum community in India and work closely with community researchers to help empower them to effect health improvements.
