The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) in conjunction with the Harvard School of Public Health supports scientific research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa. The research conducted there will examine the biological bases, prevention and treatment of the AIDS and tuberculosis epidemics, and to help educate a new generation of scientists in South Africa and elsewhere. HHMI is supporting research worked directed by Eric Rubin in order to enable research and training activities that further the mission of this research and effort in South Africa.
