The primary objective of this study is to measure the efficacy of twice daily acyclovir suppressive therapy in preventing HIV transmission among HIV-discordant couples, in which the HIV-infected partner is HSV-2-seropositive and has a CD4 cell count of 250 cells/mm3 and above. This phase III, two-arm, multi-site, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial will be conducted among 3,646 heterosexual HIV-discordant couples.
