Postmortem Study of the Burden of MDR and XDR Tuberculosis among Adult Inpatient Deaths Occurring at Edendale Hospital, Kwazulu-Natal SA

The primary aims of this study are to: 1) estimate the burden of tuberculosis (TB) among seriously ill individuals in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa; and 2) measure the proportion of TB among these patients which is drug-resistant (including MDR and XDR). The collaborating institution, Edendale Hospital, will enroll 150 consecutive inpatient deaths. Inclusion criteria will include age between 20-45 years, death occurring after hospital admission and family consent for autopsy and testing.
