Description:

The Mashi Study compares the safety and efficacy of two antiretroviral regimens Zidovudine (ZDV) alone versus ZDV plus Nevirapine (NVP) administered to HIV-1 infected pregnant women to prevent in utero and intra partum HIV-1 transmission. Additionally, the study assesses the safety and tolerance of ZDV given to babies for a period of six months to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, and compares rates of milk-borne HIV-1 transmission and rates of morbidity and mortality between breast-fed infants receiving ZDV and formula fed infants.
