Please help us welcome Dr. Jeffrey Miller, as he joins the Department as an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics. Jeff has previously worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at Duke University and at Brown University.
Dean Williams recently sent out the following announcement introducing him:
“Dr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University. He has also served in the United States Air Force, working as a Project Manager for the Robotics Research Group.
Dr. Miller’s research focuses on applications in genomics, neuroscience, and diseases of aging. He has worked on developing practical methods for finding structure in complex systems focusing on robustness to model misspecification, nonparametric Bayesian models, frequentist analysis of Bayesian methods, and efficient algorithms for inference in complex models, with applications to genomics, epidemiology, ecology, and neuroscience. His future research will focus on developing methods for the analysis of high-throughput sequence data, to help understand and combat diseases of aging.
Dr. Miller is the recipient of many distinguished awards, grants and fellowships. He received a travel grant for the Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) “Bayesian Nonparametrics: The Next Generation” workshop, the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship, and NSF, NIH, and DARPA grants. At Brown University, he received the Outstanding Dissertation Award in the Physical Sciences, the Sigma Xi Outstanding Graduate Student Award, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2011, he was one of four recipients of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center Student Research Award from the New England Statistics Symposium for outstanding research in the field of Statistics and Probability.”
