DayCon 2019 – Applications for Speakers Due 3/1

Science in the News is thrilled to announce DayCon 2019: The Art of Science! DayCon is our annual science conference event for the general public of the Greater Boston area. We aim to give non-scientists the complete conference experience by organizing a day filled with lectures, interactive poster sessions, panels, and breakout sessions. This year’s event is titled The Art of Science, and the day will consist of interdisciplinary sessions that touch upon all aspects of the intersection of art and science.

We need your help! We are currently recruiting graduate student speakers to present at this event, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 15th, 2019 in Northwest Building on Harvard’s Cambridge campus.

Apply Now! The application deadline has been extended until Friday, March 1st

There are two flavors of lecture opportunities:

1. General Lecture (30-40 minutes each)
These foundational lectures are meant to provide high-level overviews of topics that are important in today’s research landscape. Feel free to apply as an individual or a team of two (if applying as a team, you can submit a single form). If you apply individually, we may decide to pair you with a presentation partner.

2. Specialized Short Lectures (20 minutes)
These lectures will be shorter and more specialized than the general lectures. The topics below are suggestions, and you may select more specific areas within them.
Feel free to apply with anything that falls under our “The Art of Science” theme! Our goal is to have a wide variety of topics presented by graduate students in their own fields.

Sample Topics:

  • How to identify forged art
  • Dating of ancient art and how it was made
  • Computer vision
  • How the brain perceives art
  • Personal stories at the intersection of science and art
  • The difference between noise and music
  • Physiology of dance
  • How film captures photos
  • Chemistry of dyes
  • Design and materials in architecture
  • The golden ratio in math and nature
  • Pigments in nature
  • And MORE!
