Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) Fellowships

Administrative Fellowships in Hospitals (National Administrative Fellowship Centralized Application Service): Administrative fellowships provide applied, real-world work experience, along with focused mentoring, stretch assignments, and leadership experiences that can accelerate your transition into healthcare management roles. The application deadlines are generally in early October for a fellowship for the following year. There is a centralized database to search for and apply for these fellowships.

American Educational Research Association: Fellows Program honors education researchers with substantial research accomplishments.

American Statistical Association – Research Fellowships and GrantsThe general objective of the program is to foster collaborative and interdisciplinary research efforts that will continue to stimulate the development and advancement of methodology and social science research relevant to issues on which federal statistical agencies seek to provide information. The program accomplishes this by bringing academic researchers to work with statisticians and social scientists in the three federal agencies for up to one year.

Association of Public Health LaboratoriesThrough its fellowship and traineeship programs, APHL prepares students for careers in public health laboratories and supports specialized training for practicing scientists.

National Center for Health Research: Job, fellowships, and internship opportunities at a nonprofit think tank that bridges the gaps between research, healthcare, and health policy to help improve the lives of adults and children across the country.

National Institutes of Health: search the website for fellowships and funding opportunities across the Institutes (some opportunities open to non-US citizens as visiting fellows)

National Science Fund: funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering.

The following is a select list of fellowships:

 American Council of Learned Societies: The program will place up to 21 recent PhDs from the humanities and humanistic social sciences in two-year staff positions at partnering organizations in government and the nonprofit sector.

Albert Schweitzer Fellowship: The Schweitzer Fellowship programs annually serve more than 25,000 people and offer prevention, wellness and access programs that address the underlying causes of health inequities, such as poverty, the environment, and education.

American Jewish World Global Justice Fellowship: is a selective program designed to inspire, educate and train key opinion leaders in the American Jewish community to become national advocates of AJWS’s work in order to help improve the lives of people in the developing world.

Catholic Relief Services International Development fellowship Program: is an opportunity for people interested in careers in international relief and development with a faith-based organization to be placed in country programs for approx 10 months, starting in late August. Specific job responsibilities vary from country to country, but usually include work in agriculture, health, peacebuilding, education, microfinance, or a combination of these.

Diplomacy and Diversity Fellowship (Humanity in Action): is a transatlantic educational program from Humanity in Action. The Fellowship offers 24 American and European graduate students the chance to explore the changing international dynamics of diplomacy and diversity. Fellows will travel to Washington, DC, Berlin and Warsaw to study how American and European governments and societies are responding to a wide range of international issues.

Echoing Green Fellowship (for start ups): Echoing Green’s Fellowship Programs will offer more than $4.6 million in seed-stage funding and support this year to emerging leaders working to bring about positive social change.

Environmental Leadership Fellowship Program

Fulbright International Educational Exchange Program: is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. (Harvard Chan Administers the institutional process to apply for Fulbright.  The Helen Hay Whitney Foundation: supports early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences.

Kaiser Permanente Administrative FellowshipsThe Kaiser Permanente Administrative Fellowship program seeks talented masters-trained individuals who are passionate about health care operations and who want to develop their management skills and leadership potential in a dynamic and unique environment.

Mass General – Administrative Fellowship Programa two-year program designed to provide health care professionals with essential hospital management and administration training in ambulatory care and inpatient settings.

Mayo Clinic – Administrative Fellowship Programoffers direct participation in activities that build and strengthen essential administrative skills at the largest academic health care institution in the world.

MD Anderson Center – Cancer Prevention Research Training Program: prepares health scientists and clinicians to assume leadership roles as research investigators in the field of cancer prevention and control (short term and long term fellowships).

National Health Service Corps: offers financial and other support to primary care providers and sites in underserved communities.

Oregon Summer and Post-Grad Fellowship Program: they offer the following two programs:

The Hatfield Resident Fellows program targets postgraduate Master and PhD students with a strong scholarship record and earnest interest in public service and leadership. The Fellowship is an academically rigorous, project-oriented, educational experience designed to provide each Fellow with an opportunity to acquire leadership skills with a public service agency in Oregon.
The Oregon Summer Fellowship is a 10-week fellowship that places graduate students with local levels of government, non-profits or private consultancies providing dynamic challenges for the Fellow and professional expectations from the sponsoring agency for the future leaders.

 The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans: a portable fellowship to support the graduate education of new Americans

Presidential Management Fellowship: flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates interested in policy.

Rand Corporation: offers a number of internship and fellowship programs allowing students to conduct short-term independent research within the framework of an ongoing RAND project; and also provides postdoctoral candidates with the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills through several RAND fellowships and programs.

The Schweitzer Fellowship: fellowships focus on prevention, wellness and access programs that address the underlying causes of health inequities, such as poverty, the environment, and education.  

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities – State Policy Fellowship Program: State Policy Fellows tackle domestic policy challenges in areas like health care, taxes, anti-poverty policy, education, and criminal justice. Working in independent, highly respected policy organizations located across the country, Fellows analyze the impact of state budget and tax policy choices on low-income residents and promote positive reforms.

The Stuart A. Wesbury, Jr. Postgraduate FellowshipTrains managers in the health care industry.

Winston Fellowship: The David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship is a 12-month postgraduate experience in Washington DC. The first portion of the fellowship is a planned rotation of at least three months during which the Fellows visit various centers of current health policy development at the national level and may include activities at nearby state capitals. During the final months, the Fellows will pursue a full-time placement with the guidance of the Winston Board of Directors, which is comprised of key policymakers from the private and public sectors.

UNICEF Young Professionals Program: recruits young talent with the potential to grow into managerial and leadership positions in the organization.

US FDA – Commissioner’s Fellowship Program: FDA invites outstanding health care professionals, scientists, and engineers to apply to its two-year Fellowship Program, where they will receive regulatory science training and the chance to conduct cutting-edge research on targeted scientific, policy, or regulatory issues under the mentorship of an FDA senior scientist.

White House Fellowship: Founded in 1964 by Lyndon B. Johnson, the White House Fellows program is one of America’s most prestigious programs for leadership and public service. White House Fellowships offer exceptional young men and women first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the federal government. Selected individuals typically spend a year working as a full-time, paid Fellow to senior White House Staff, Cabinet Secretaries and other top-ranking government officials. Fellows also participate in an education program consisting of roundtable discussions with renowned leaders from the private and public sectors, and trips to study U.S. policy in action both domestically and internationally. Fellowships are awarded on a strictly non-partisan basis.

Yale New Haven Health System Fellowships: Yale New Have Health Systems seeks masters level health management candidates for two administrative fellowships (application period opens in summer with fall deadline) for fellowship to begin the following July.
