Why was this tool developed?
This tool was developed for Probation Services’ leadership to gather data from probation officers about the need for services when supervising offenders with a history of engagement in violent extremism. The domains included in the tool were identified via a series of interviews (39 interviews) and surveys (206 responses) with federal probation officers.
How was the tool developed?
Tool development: Interview and survey data were extrapolated by the research team to develop specific metrics to monitor compliance with recommended behaviors, rapport between the officer and the releasee and need for services. The metrics were then presented to a group of probation officers who provided feedback on their face and content validity during a meeting at the American Probation and Parole Association 47th Annual Training Institute in August 2022. Revisions were provided based on the officers’ feedback.
