Heather Smith

Research Assistant

Heather Smith values research that works with individual and community stakeholders to co-design equitable services and systems. Her interest in public health has led her to opportunities that combine healthcare delivery and human-centered design for Rush University, UI Health’s Institute for Healthcare Delivery Design, and the Design Laboratory (D-Lab) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

At the D-Lab, Heather supports systems and behavioral research projects and the Design of Social Innovation class taught by Patrick Whitney and André Nogueira. This graduate course exposes students from schools across Harvard University to advanced design frameworks and methods useful to deal with seemingly intractable public health issues.

Heather is pursuing a Master of Design Methods (MDM) from the IIT Institute of Design (ID). She has a BA in Communication Research and a Minor in Art History from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
