New Harvard President

Dear Harvard Chan School community,

Please join me in offering the warmest congratulations to Dr. Lawrence Bacow on his election as the 29th President of Harvard University. The son of refugees who came to this country to escape oppression in Europe, Larry is a deeply respected scholar and leader, known for his belief in higher education as a gateway to opportunity and a tool for transforming lives.

If you have not done so already, I encourage you to read about Larry in Harvard Magazine and in the Harvard Gazette.

With long experience in higher education leadership and deep knowledge of the University, Larry is ideally positioned to build on the extraordinary momentum established by President Drew Faust over her decade-plus as Harvard’s President.

I am confident that Larry will be a remarkable leader in the midst of these challenging times for higher education. He will be a champion of Harvard’s engagement in local and global communities. And he will be a great friend to the Harvard Chan School at a time of critical importance for public health education and research.

Sincerely,

Michelle A. Williams, ScD
