Statement on Pittsburgh synagogue shooting

Dear members of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health community,

We are deeply saddened by the occurrence of yet another senseless attack motivated by hate this weekend, this time within a synagogue in Pittsburgh. This deadly, horrific event took place in a broader context of other hate crimes and shootings across the country, including the mailed pipe bombs and the shootings in both Chicago and Kentucky. On behalf of the entire School, we condemn gun violence and the rhetoric of bigotry, and we mourn the victims and send our sympathy to their families and communities. We join all members of the Harvard Chan School in the resolve to work with other public health scholars, students, professionals, and policymakers to prevent future tragedies.

Students who are experiencing distress and seeking support can contact Colleen Cronin in Student Affairs (617-432-1542 , ccronin@hsph.harvard.edu) or Harvard University Counseling and Mental Health Services at 617-495-2042 (617-495-5711 after hours).

Faculty and staff members can contact Linda Picard in Human Resources (lpicard@hsph.harvard.edu), Mahy El-Kouedi in Faculty Affairs (elkouedi@hsph.harvard.edu), or Harvard’s Employee Assistance Program at 877-327-4278 (1-877-EAP-HARV).
