Framework for Change

At the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, we are committed to the ongoing journey of becoming a truly inclusive and antiracist environment committed to diversity, equity and belonging for all of our community members. It will be important that we develop an infrastructure that allows us to infuse and embed best practices into the fabric of the Harvard Chan experience at the institutional, departmental, and individual levels. And we will need a guiding framework to accomplish this work.

The Inclusive Excellence framework is a model and approach to diversity and inclusion intended assist higher education institutions with integrating diversity and inclusion quality efforts into the core of our institutional functions. Engaging in this work means that we will strive to infuse diversity and inclusion into our recruiting, admissions, and hiring processes; into our curricular and co-curricular activities; into our administrative structures and practices; and into our cultural norms. In doing so, our long-term goals can only be achieved through a collective and sustained commitment over time involving our leadership, faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, students, and alumni.

This approach, which continues to evolve in its application on college campuses, will influence our work in the coming months and years, and has informed the development of the strategic plan and strategic implementation plan.

This paper from the American Association of Colleges and Universities provides an introduction to the Inclusive Excellence Framework in higher education.
