Harvard DrPH Program Visits Massachusetts State House

On July 7th, as part of New Student Orientation, the Havard DrPH Class of 2020 and DrPH Program staff visited the Massachusetts State House office of Representative Jeffrey Sánchez. Rep. Sánchez is the Massachusetts State Representative who represents Suffolk county’s 15th District in southwest Boston, including the Longwood Medical Area, home to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Among other responsibilities, Representative Sánchez also serves as Chair on the Massachusetts State Joint Committee on Health Care Financing.

Rep. Sánchez and his staff were gracious hosts, providing a behind-the-scenes tour of the State House, through hallowed halls and even onto the Senate Chamber floor! The students also spoke candidly with Rep. Sánchez about his leadership experience, career trajectory and the new Massachusetts State Budget Conference Committee, from which he had just emerged. It was a truly special opportunity and experience for the DrPH students, many of whom were new to the Boston area, state government or even the United States in general.

Cohort 4 students described the experience as,

“… great going to the State House to observe the leaders of the past and present and learn how we can build upon their foundation to create public health change in the 21st century.”

Thank you to Ra’Shaun Nalls, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Associate Director of Community Engagement, for helping coordinate the visit!
