Chief and Chair
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Mary Ann Stevenson, MD, PhD is Chief of Radiation Oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School (HMS). Dr. Stevenson’s major academic/ research interests include the identification and characterization of radiation-induced signal transduction pathways/ radiation-induced gene activation; as well as organization behavior and the application of LEAN methodology to healthcare operations and management. Her clinical areas of expertise are hematologic malignancies/lymphomas and sarcomas. The Keith C. Field CyberKnife Center at BIDMC—the first of its kind in New England—was established under Dr. Stevenson’s leadership. CyberKnife is a revolutionary, non-invasive radiosurgical system that delivers radiation treatments to tumors with unprecedented accuracy, while minimizing the damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The Field CyberKnife Center at BIDMC is now recognized as national and international center of excellence in SRS/SBRT.

Dr. Stevenson is the author of dozens of articles on cancer biology and radiation biology, and has presented her work at regional, national, and international conferences. She teaches LEAN management as a faculty member in the Executive Educational Program at Harvard School of Public Health. She belongs to many professional associations, including Radiation Research Society, American Society for Cell Biology, American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and American Association for Cancer Research.

In 1994, Dr. Stevenson was appointed by President Clinton to serve as a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments.

Dr. Stevenson received her BS, MD, and PhD in cancer biology from Stanford University. She completed an internship in Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and her residency training at the Joint Center for Radiation Therapy at HMS.

In addition to her clinical and research positions, she is a member of the Board of Trustees, member of the Cancer Center Executive Committee and Medical Executive Committee at BIDMC.
