Journalist Nicola Carslaw is a consulting editor for BBC News. As a risk communication practitioner and media insider, she also works as an independent consultant, advising government authorities and businesses on news management and media relations. Her specialist knowledge has been gained during a career of more than 20 years as a BBC News reporter, foreign correspondent and contributing editor for TV, radio and online. High profile assignments included reporting the fall of the Berlin Wall and collapse of Communism in Europe, the Clinton Presidential campaign and interviewing Nelson Mandela. Latterly, as BBC consumer affairs correspondent Nicola reported from China, Africa, the Americas and throughout Europe. At the sharp end of risk communication, Nicola’s reports often led the consumer news agenda, with coverage of major subjects such as the BSE crisis, the debate over genetically modified organisms and other significant food and health-related issues. Nicola delivers courses on media communications and speaks at conferences and seminars, including at the European Food Safety Authority and Harvard School of Public Health.
