Xiaowei Yan

Xiaowei Yan has been the Harvard University Laser Safety Officer since 2003. In this capacity, he oversees the laser safety for over 800 Class 3b and 4 lasers that are used in the research program for 140 groups and leads the University’s Non-ionizing Radiation Safety Program. He conducts approximately 400 laser inspections per year and provides guidance on laser lab design. He has developed and routinely offers user training programs for laser containing instrument, laser microscopes through bench-top use of lasers.
Mr. Yan is actively involved in the development of laser safety standards. He is a member of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Writing Committee Z136.8 on the Safe Use of Lasers in Research, Development & Testing and Z136 Technical Subcommittee TSC-2 ‘Hazard Evaluations and Classification’.
Mr. Yan holds a Master of Science from Harvard School of Public Health in Radiation Protection. He has over 10 years of experience as a radiation physicist. At the Harvard Cyclotron where he evaluated medical radiation exposures in treatment plans and conducted radiation physics experiments.
