CHDS Seminar with Maurice Smith: Action Amidst Uncertainty in the Human Motor System.

December 7th, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Center for Health Decision Science (CHDS) Seminar Series: Maurice Smith, MD, PhD, Gordon McKay Professor of Bioengineering at Harvard University.  Professor Smith leads the Neuromotor Control Laboratory at the Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science, Harvard University.

Abstract: Variability is endemic both in our ability to execute motor actions and in the environments in which we act.  Dr. Smith will discuss recent work from his lab that characterizes several different ways in which variability and uncertainty influence the planning and control of motor actions in humans.  On one hand, variability can be helpful in that it fosters exploration that can promote learning in novel environments.  But on the other hand, variability decreases the fidelity of our actions, and their recent work has uncovered several distinct mechanisms by which the human motor system deals with variability and the resulting uncertainty present in the goals of our actions, in the environment where our actions take place, and in our actions themselves.
