Abstract:

Science must fulfill its social mission by guiding public policy. Epidemiology must provide direction and scientific strength to public health in advancing the goal of societal good. While epidemiology has scored many successes in identifying the determinants of health and risk factors of disease, its pursuit of independent attribution and linear models of causation has largely ignored the dynamics of complex adaptive systems. Recognition that health is configured by the dynamic interaction of several complex adaptive systems needs to influence the training and research orientation of epidemiologists. Only then can epidemiology guide public policy to direct and deliver impactful interventions that translate into better and more equitable health outcomes.
