MIPS Seminar: Cell jamming: Lessons in physiology from cancer biology

September 13th, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

In his groundbreaking book The Origins of Order, the natural philosopher Stuart A. Kauffman proposed the general biological principle that living systems exist in a solid regime near the edge of chaos, and that natural selection achieves and sustains such a poised state. In this talk I propose that, in certain cellular collectives at least, this poised state as predicted in the abstract by Kaufman is realized in the particular by the jammed regime just at the brink of unjamming.
