Reckoning with Legacy of Slavery at Harvard in Search of our Personal Truths while Leading (For Faculty & Staff)

February 28th, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

In the last 20 years, the history of higher education institutions’ support and participation in slavery has developed into a field of academic research allowing institutions to investigate their histories. For those most marginalized, this history may not require deep research to unravel. Our numbered presence in the classrooms, labs, and offices may be a daily reminder of this past that we know too well through the manifestation of their present consequences. This session is an opportunity to openly discuss the complexities and complicated realities of researching the legacy of slavery at higher education institutions, reflect on the embodied experience of leading while holding our own truths and takeaways from the student perspective. Please note this session is for Harvard Chan School faculty and staff.

This session will be led by AnaĂ«lle SĂ©Ă¯de. AnaĂ«lle was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and later migrated to the United States. Her experiences as an immigrant and love for research and social justice led her to the field of public health. Through her public health training at New York University, she studied social epidemiology in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Madrid, Spain and Washington, DC. Her past research includes topics such as positive youth development in girls of color, mental health in Caribbean communities, and violence intervention and prevention in disenfranchised communities.
