Differential Impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic on Stigmatized Populations: African Americans in the US, Dalits in India and Roma in Europe

Presentation by: Mary Travis Bassett, Margareta Matache, and Vikram Patel

Dr. Bassett serves as the Director of the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University, as well as the FXB Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights within the department of Social and Behavioral Science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She has over 30 years of experience devoted to promoting health equity and social justice, both in the United States and abroad.

Dr. Matache serves as the Director of the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights’ Roma Program and is also a Harvard instructor. From 2005 to 2012, Margareta, a Roma rights activist from Romania, was the Executive Director of Romani CRISS, a leading Roma rights organization that defends and promotes the rights of Roma.

Dr. Patel is the Pershing Square Professor of Global Health and Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow within the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He also serves as a Professor within the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is also the Co-Founder and Member of Managing Committee at Sangath. In 2015, he was listed in TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential persons of the year.
