HARMONY: The Development of a Culturally-Relevant, Randomized Controlled Mindfulness-Based Stress Management Intervention to Reduce Cardiometabolic Risk in African American Women

Dr. Cheryl Giscombé, PhD, is the LeVine Family Distinguished Associate Professor of Quality of Life, Health Promotion and Wellness at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing. In 2007, she was selected as a “Leader in the Field” by the American Psychological Association, and she was selected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2017. Her program of research focuses on understanding and reducing stress-related health disparities among African Americans. She is highly regarded for her focus on culturally sensitive strategies to reduce health disparities, including the incorporation of mindfulness-based stress reduction in underserved populations. She is the creator of the Superwoman Schema conceptual framework and questionnaire, which supports research on stress and health in African American women.
