Monthly Archives: October 2011 online training library available in Kresge LL19

The Department of Information Technology is pleased to announce a new training option for the community.  The Instructional Computing Facility has added two stations to the computer laboratory in Kresge LL19. offers thousands of high-quality training courses on hundreds of software packages.  The training libraries are organized so users can take entire courses (e.g., Excel for Mac 2011 Essential Training) or can search by topic (e.g., pivot tables in Microsoft Excel).  Topics range from beginner to advanced in complexity.  They also range from common software titles to more technical topics.

There are more than 200 titles for the Mac, a growing area of training need at HSPH.

Headphones are available for check out from ICF staff members from 9 am to 5 pm.  We encourage people to bring their own headphones or ear buds.  The laboratory is open 24-7.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Pilot

The Department of Information Technology is pleased to announce a pilot of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) technology to power the public kiosk units available in the Kresge and FXB buildings.  We are piloting a combination of Samsung and Wyse thin-clients replacing the kiosk computers.  These new units talk to a robust central server powered by VMWare View and VSphere utilizing Dell and EMC hardware.

We are also piloting VDI for use in the HSPH student computer laboratories and other purposes.

VDI technology could prove to have substantial advantages over current practices including cost savings, energy savings, decreased staff hours to maintain student laboratory computers, improved performance for students, improved security, and increased flexibility in supporting software needs of HSPH courses.

We encourage the community to test the kiosk stations and report any issues or comments to the Helpdesk at 432-HELP.

As our pilot develops, we will also seek students and faculty to test student computing demonstration units in the student computing laboratories.

Live chat demonstration

The recent Forum@HSPH event, held on Wednesday, October 20, 2011, demonstrated live chat technology during the event.

More than 150 people tuned into the live broadcast and a few dozen actively participated in the chat adding a new dimension to the event.  The chat allowed people to login as a guest or with their Facebook or Twitter credentials.  People that logged in via Twitter or Facebook could easily share their comments via a chat sharing feature.

The chat room was staffed with a moderator who answered questions, monitored the chat, and passed questions along to the event room.

On-demand video of the event entitled “Reforming the 2012 Farm Bill: Subsidies, Food Assistance, and America’s Health” may be viewed on the Forum site.

Reforming the 2012 Farm Bill: Subsidies, Food Assistance, and America’s Health

Try watching the event on your iPhone or iPad!

Tech Talk:  The Forum’s video page auto detects your mobile device and delivers an optimized stream for your device.  Video is hosted by an external vendor, MobileCDN, and fed from an encoder in the HSPH control room in Kresge G29.   The Leadership Studio, like many locations at HSPH, feed audio and video to the Kresge G29 control room over a fiber connection.
