National Cyber Security Awareness Month Events

In recognition that October is National CyberSecurity Awareness month, Harvard University Information Technology Security will be conducting information security briefings in the LMA area for faculty, students and staff.

Two will be at the Harvard Medical School (HMS) and one at the School of Public Health (SPH).

Below is the schedule:

October 4th 10 – 11 am at HMS TMEC 227

Topics: Cloudy with a chance of identity theft. Why a good password is very often your best defense   and  Is it ever not social? Protecting yourself in the age of social networking.

October 10th 12 -1 PM at SPH Kresge G1

Topics: Is it ever not social? Protecting yourself in the age of social networking.  and  Have device, will travel. How to be mobile and safe.

October 17th 2 – 3 pm at HMS TMEC 227

Topics: Have device, will travel. How to be mobile and safe.  and  Taming Lions, Tigers…..and Windows, Turn your operating system into a lean, mean, malware fighting machine.

Please come out and participate in a practical discussion on how to maintain your privacy.

New Staff Member: Jacob Yerdon

The HSPH Department of Information Technology welcomes new hire Jacob Yerdon. Jake will work as a senior web and application developer for the HSPH web team. Jake replaces Kevin Wnek who left IT for Thomson Reuters and the position of senior web and streaming developer.

Jake joins us from Lockheed Martin where he worked for four years in two different roles; first as a systems integration analyst and more recently as a data warehouse analyst.  Prior to his work at Lockheed, he was a computer specialist for Madison-Oneida Regional Information Center where he helped coordinate the mass  implementation of a school management software used by over 30 New York public schools in central/upstate New York.

Jake has excellent experience with and knowledge of open source technologies/languages including PHP, WordPress, AJAX and MySQL.  He has become an immediate asset in working on the HSPH website rebranding and migration to WordPress, a project that is scheduled for launch in November.

Jake has both a bachelor of science and master of science degree from SUNY Institute of Technology.

In his new role as senior web and application developer, Jake will contribute to many important processes and projects, including:

  • HSPH website redesign
  • MyHSPH portal development
  • Maintenance and enhancement of the HSPH web team’s portfolio of web applications
  • Oversight of our Google technologies (search, analytics)
  • Training end users on use of web technology

Please join us in welcoming Jake to our technical staff and to the HSPH community!

Interesting facts:
Away from work, Jake enjoys candy-making and spent several years making gourmet chocolate before trying his hand in the Italian wine industry.


HSPH IT Welcomes Fall Coops

We are pleased to welcome two coops this fall from Roxbury Community College, Hansel Ruiz and  Moses Mokuolu.  This placement is part of a new partnership coordinated by the HSPH Office of Human Resources.

Hansel and Moses will work ~10-12 hours each per week.  They are both candidates for an associate degree in Information System Technology and have outstanding technical skills.  They will provide computer support to the community at the Helpdesk as well as in the field with support and training provided by our User Services team.

Maintenance Window on Thursday Evening, September 13

To all HSPH users,

This Thursday night, September 13th, we will be performing our normal system maintenance to all servers.

The maintenance window will last from 7PM to 1AM.

The following services will have one or two small outages:

(You can continue to work, but may have brief pauses while services restart)

The following services will be unaffected during the maintenance window:

  • HPCC system
  • HUIT Icemail (Outlook) system
  • iSites

IMPORTANT – Some areas of the HSPH network will be reconfigured between 7PM and 8PM to enhance security.

There will be a 5 to 10 minute network outage when your PC will not be able to communicate.

If you experience any issues after 8:00PM, please reboot your PC.

All future planned maintenance dates are Thursday nights from 7PM to 1AM on the following dates:

  • 10/11/2012
  • 11/15/2012
  • 12/13/2012
