Marcia Castro named AAAS Leshner Fellow

Marcia Castro, associate professor of demography at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, has been selected as a Leshner Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Castro is one of 15 new Fellows for 2017-18 for the AAAS’ Alan I. Leshner Leadership Institute for public engagement with science. The Fellows were chosen for leadership and excellence in their research careers and interest in promoting meaningful dialogue between science and society. In June, the Fellows will receive a week of training at AAAS headquarters in Washington, D.C. in public engagement and science communication, networking, and public engagement plan development. Afterwards, they’ll return to their respective institutions with resources and connections to develop and implement public engagement activities, opportunities for training other scientists, and increased capacity for public engagement leadership.

Castro’s research focuses on infectious diseases, environmental change and health, environmental management for vector control, spatial patterns of disease transmission, and infant and child mortality.
