Fun with pies on Pi Day

March 21, 2023 – On March 14, two departments at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health celebrated Pi Day by sharing and eating a wide variety of homemade pies.

Pi Day recognizes the number π, or pi, and its mathematical significance in describing circles. The day is observed on March 14, corresponding to the first three digits of pi, 3.14. A popular way to celebrate is to eat pies, since the words “pi” and “pie” sound the same, and pies happen to be circular.

The Harvard Chan School event was a friendly competition between the Department of Information Technology and Office of Educational Programs, with bakers from each group submitting pies such as salted honey pie, blueberry peach pie, and banana mango tart. Department members got a chance to sample almost a dozen different pies before voting for their favorites.
