Dozens of young people afflicted with a serious lung disease. Is vaping to blame?

Nearly 100 people across 14 states—primarily young adults and adolescents—have been reported to have a serious lung disease that may be associated with vaping, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on August 17, 2019. There is no evidence that an infectious disease is causing the illness, according to the CDC, which will be working with state health departments on an investigation.

“This is the headline we’ve been trying to prevent,” Joseph Allen, assistant professor of exposure assessment science at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said in an August 19, 2019 Popular Science article. “When you have millions of kids inhaling this cocktail of chemicals that were never tested for inhalation safety, this type of headline is predictable, and also avoidable.”
