Fundamental environmental protections ‘up in the air’ under Trump administration

During the first year of the Trump administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken an approach aimed at being friendlier to industry, reversing many of the regulations and agreements made under President Barack Obama. Former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, professor of the practice of public health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment, weighed in on those decisions in a January 30, 2018 interview with WBUR’s Radio Boston.

She said, “We have a real undermining not just of specific rules, but the way the agency does its business, its fundamental policy interpretations of laws that have been standard practice for decades.” As a result, she said, fundamental protections that the public has relied on through past administrations of both parties are up in the air.
