Facebook Live: Doctors’ opioid prescribing patterns

On Thursday, February 16, 2017, Michael Barnett, assistant professor of health policy and management at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an HMS instructor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, joined the New England Journal of Medicine for a Facebook Live discussion on his recent paper examining the effect of physician’s opioid prescribing patterns. The study found that emergency room patients treated by physicians who prescribe opioids more often are at greater risk for long-term opioid use even after a single prescription than those who see less-frequent prescribers.
