Health care could worsen under Republican health care bill

Atul Gawande, professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and director of Ariadne Labs, appeared May 7, 2017 on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos to discuss his views on how the American Health Care Act, the Republican-backed health reform bill passed by the House, could worsen the health of Americans. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan also was among the program’s guests.

Gawande described his three main concerns about the bill. “One is the weakening for protections of people with pre-existing conditions. Another is the major cuts in the number of people who are on Medicaid coverage. And then the third is the increased cost for people who buy insurance on their own, especially if they’re over 50.” He went on to say, “…this is a bill that makes each measure of health and health care worse, rather than better than under Obamacare.”
