How #MeToo has both helped and hurt survivors

While the #MeToo movement has empowered many people to share long-concealed stories of sexual harassment or assault and prompted a national conversation about these topics, the movement has also generated a backlash that shames and sometimes threatens victims, according to a recent Glamour article.

The article quoted Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health trauma researcher Karestan Koenen, who went public with her own rape experience several years ago. “Assault takes a person’s control and power away, and it should be in someone’s own power and control to tell their story,” said Koenen, professor of psychiatric epidemiology, in the October 15, 2018 article. But she warned that sharing a story on the Internet means that that story will always be there—and cedes some control over it.
