Is it OK to play frisbee during social distancing?

It’s safe to toss a frisbee back and forth during social distancing if you keep 10 to 12 feet away from your frisbee partner—but because COVID-19 could potentially be spread by the frisbee, make sure to wash your hands before touching your face, according to Ashish Jha, K.T. Li Professor of Global Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and director of the Harvard Global Health Institute.

Jha answered the frisbee question and several others about the coronavirus posed by NPR listeners on March 26, 2020.

Other questions Jha answered:

If you get COVID-19 and recover, will you have immunity to the virus, and is there any sense of how long that immunity will last?

All evidence to date suggests that once you’ve been infected and have recovered, you should have immunity. But experts don’t know how long the immunity will last.

Are recovered individuals expected to practice social distancing as strictly as those who haven’t been exposed?

Once you’ve been infected, presumably you can’t be re-infected or infect others, so it should be safe for you to resume regular activities.

Can coronavirus be spread through the wind, making six feet of social distancing moot?

On a windy day, droplets from someone infected with COVID-19 would disperse widely, and even if a nearby person came into contact with the droplets, it would be such a small amount that they’d be unlikely to be infected. If you’re 10 to 12 feet away from others, you’re probably pretty safe even on a windy day.
