Paula Johnson named first African American president of Wellesley College

Johnson-Paula_VoicesPaula Johnson, MPH ’85, a professor in the Department of Epidemiology, has been named president of Wellesley College, according to a February 12, 2016 announcement. Johnson, who will begin her new role in July, told the Boston Globe that she felt a special responsibility as the women’s liberal arts college’s first African American leader.

Johnson, a former chairwoman of the Boston Public Health Commission, is an internationally recognized women’s health specialist and a pioneer in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. She is a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she currently serves as chief of the Division of Women’s Health and executive director of the Mary Horrigan Connors Center for Women’s Health & Gender Biology.
