Plant-based ‘meat’ may be future trend

Alternative “meat” made from soy, beans, potatoes, peas, and other vegetables is becoming more mainstream, showing up on menus from trendy restaurants to fast-food joints.

A June 14, 2019 article in the Hindustan Times described the increased availability of vegetarian and vegan foods that mimic chicken, sausage, and burgers, and noted that this trend is in line with the so-called “planetary health diet,” outlined in a recent EAT-Lancet Commission report, that experts say will boost the health of both people and the planet.

Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and co-author of the EAT-Lancet Commission report, told the Hindustan Times, “People do change their diets when they have the right information. Red meat consumption has gone down 40% in the United States since 1970, most likely because of health reasons.”
