Course Materials and Fees

The Curriculum Center works closely with instructors to identify and promote the use of free online resources as course reading assignments wherever possible. However, for some courses, materials fees may apply to cover the cost of copyright permissions clearance for those readings that are not otherwise freely available, and may be provided as uploaded documents on a course website. Course materials fees are billed following the add/drop period each term, and are not included in tuition.

Course materials fees are based on the individual reading assignments for each course as set by the instructor. Readings which may require fees for use include book excerpts, teaching cases, articles from journals not available under the Harvard Libraries’ online resources, and self-assessment materials. Course materials fees may also cover the cost of printing in courses for which a course packet is assigned.

You will find an upper estimate included with the course description in the online catalog for courses that may require a materials fee. This figure is here to help you as you plan your schedule; the final materials fee will be communicated by email during the first week of classes and will not exceed the posted estimate.

Note that these figures do not include estimates for the cost of textbooks. For textbook information, please see the Harvard Coop link in the catalog listing or the course syllabus.
