The COVID-19 Surge in India

S V Subramanian, professor of population health and geography, was recently interviewed by The Harvard Gazette. He speaks about his ongoing policy research project in India and his first-hand experience and thoughts about the recent COVID-19 surge.

“It’s been almost a perfect storm for India, a combination of things like that super-spreader event of the Kumbh Mela or the election rallies,” says Subramanian when asked about the infection rates in April.

“In India, anything and everything is a super-spreader event. You go to work in Bombay: That’s a super-spreader event on a train. Everything in India is a super-spreader event for the vast majority of people.”
