Some six months in, the US has 20-25 percent of the world’s cases and deaths despite having under 5 percent of the global population. What has happened here? And could leadership, including public health leadership, have reduced the number of lives lost? I will reflect on my time as New York City’s health commissioner from 2014 to 2018—during which microbes played an unexpected and outsized role: for example, Ebola, Legionnaires, Zika—and discuss lessons learned for the “big one”: COVID-19.This webinar is open to the Harvard community and is part of a monthly series called “Racism and Health — Understanding &amp\; Addressing Its Multiple Mechanisms”, sponsored by the Department of Social &amp\; Behavioral Sciences.
