Stigma and discrimination shape LGBTQ people’s experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV), yet existing theories of LGBTQ health inequities are limited in accounting for IPV. This talk will review existing conceptual approaches to the role of anti-LGBTQ stigma in IPV and propose a new approach that addresses the socioeconomic impacts of stigma as well as its psychological effects. Intersections between anti-LGBTQ stigma and other systems of dominance and oppression, including racism, ableism, and sexism, will be highlighted.

About the Speaker

Gabe Murchison (he/him) is a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative and Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS. Murchison’s research addresses mental health and substance use inequities among LGBTQ adolescents and young adults, focusing on the roles of interpersonal violence and close relationships. He completed his PhD in Population Health Sciences (Social & Behavioral Sciences) at Harvard Chan in May of 2021.
