Ash B. Alpert MD MFA (they/them) is a fellow in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Wilmot Cancer Institute of the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Alpert’s research investigates community solutions to improving the experiences and outcomes of transgender people with cancer. They work with an advisory board of transgender people who have been diagnosed with cancer with whom they have conducted research, published manuscripts, and successfully applied for grant funding over the last two years. This year, with a Young Investigator Award from Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation, Dr. Alpert is developing patient-centered and non-stigmatizing gender identity data collection methods that can be implemented in oncology settings and investigating the connections between violence and cancer risk for transgender people. Dr. Alpert is involved with advocacy efforts nationally as a member of the ASCO Sexual and Gender Minority Task Force and has been asked to speak to prominent national oncology organizations such as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network regarding institutional and structural changes to improve outcomes for transgender people with cancer.
