Current Position: SD student in the Department of Global Health and Population
Alex’s current research examines a different dimension of cultural norms to understand how HIV manifests in that context. Alex’s three research projects/dissertation papers utilize data from one of three studies in sub-Saharan Africa. In the first, he is using longitudinal demographic and surveillance data from the Africa Centre (K-Rith) in KwaZulu-Natal South Africa to examine HIV incident risk associated with local engagement and marriage patterns in this Zulu community. This work was successfully presented at IAS 2016 as a poster. Completion of this manuscript and submission for publication is scheduled for 2017. In the second project he is using qualitative data from Malawi to examine men’s perceptions of health systems institutions, and attempting to understand in what ways these perceptions influence low HIV testing rates for men in Malawi. I have completed literature review for this paper, the data collection was completed by GAIA in 2015 and analysis and writing for this paper will take place in 2017. In the third he is using qualitative interviews with commercial sex workers in Zambia to will RPPR Page 30
B.4 (B.4 COMBINED AIDS 2017 FINAL.pdf) examine the role that HIV self-testing and the associated improvements in HIV status will play on the price of condomed and condomless sex in this market. This data is being collected by ZEST in collaboration with local partners. Literature review has taken place, data collection is ongoing, and analysis and writing will take place in 2017.

Isabel Fulcher (2013-2018)
Current Position: PhD Student
Isabel is interested in developing statistical methods that can identify underlying causal mechanisms of potential interventions in settings where this proves particularly challenging, such as in the presence of unmeasured confounding in observational studies and spillover effects on a network. Her primary focus area for application of these methods is sexual and reproductive health, specifically related to HIV treatment and prevention, improvement of maternal health outcomes, and increasing access to family planning. She is also invested in research capacity building in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Kaitlyn Cook (2013-2018)
Current Position: PhD Student
Kaitlyn is a fourth year PhD student in the Department of Biostatistics, where she works to develop statistical methodology for the monitoring and analysis of cluster-randomized trials with interval-censored time-to-event endpoints.  Her research is predominantly motivated by statistical challenges encountered during the Botswana Combination Prevention Project (BCPP), a cluster-randomized trial of combination HIV prevention.  In particular, she has proposed a simulation-based framework to permit conditional power calculation with correlated interval-censored data, and is currently working on bootstrapping and augmentation methods to improve efficiency in cluster-randomized settings. On the basis of her conditional power work, Kaitlyn was named a finalist in the Society for Clinical Trial’s Thomas C. Chalmers Student Scholarship competition, and has been awarded an NRSA individual predoctoral fellowship (F31) to study “Novel Statistical Methods for Cluster-Randomized HIV Prevention Trials.” Kaitlyn is also broadly interested in issues of health equity and LGBTQ healthcare, and is passionate about statistical education and promoting diversity in STEM.
